I took the TOEFL test today, for the first time. Every beginning is difficult, especially for a challenge-level test. When the time ended, I actually felt a little dizzy.

The test I took was a paper-based test, which was a little different from the internet-based test using widely nowadays. It consisted of three sections. Each of the sections was designed to test the different abilities of candidates.

Section 1 was the listening, and it was divided into three parts. Each part had its own specially propose. For example, part one was likely to test the comprehension of the day-to-day conversations, and part three was probably to test the listening ability of the lectures. Due to not understanding some conversations and questions, I surmised that I lost 10 or 12 questions to the whole 50 questions.

Section 2 was the grammar, and it was divided into two parts. Part one was the kind that you should choose one correct answer for the blank, while part two was the type that you should choose one incorrect usage in a sentence. My pace was too slow that I missed 5 questions. I guessed that 10 or 12 questions had been lost to the whole 40 questions.

Section 3 was the reading, and it had 5 articles. A lot of unknown words present to my view. After finishing two articles with a bad grace, I totally get lost in the next three. If I had a good luck, I would just get 15 questions wrong to the whole 50 questions.

Look back to the problems I met at the test, the pace was the No.1. Sometimes I waste too much time on one question. Secondly, my lacking vocabulary greatly blocked me to understand the conversations and articles. This is the most labored thing which I have been struggling with. In the end, the ability of the listening is the most important thing I need to improve immediately.

In order to solve the problems above, I made a little plan for that.

Daily plan:

  1. To improve listening, I should watch 1.5 hours TV news.
  2. To improve grammar and pace, I should do 30~50 exercises and work over them.
  3. To improve reading, I should read 2~3 articles on newspaper.

Weekly plan:

  • Take one simulative test and work over it.

My goal is to get the 620 score. I hope the plan can work for it.
