与其耿耿于怀，不如超然面对

There are 3139 words on the TOEFL words book.  Not too many, but still be a tough task to achieve.

I commenced the first attempt in Jan and recited List 1 – 30. After that, I went for the ESL classes and could not keep doing the job. I started again when the ESL finished in May.

I made a plan for reciting all the lists. But when I finished the new List 31 – 50, I dropped the plan because of some downcast affair. Sleeping, playing games, watching movies, I degenerated for a long time until my 30th birthday on June 25. That day, I made a promise that I must comprehend I have not time to waste and I must do what I should do or living the rest life with nothing!

Today is the final day in the whole ESL program, and the only thing we need to do is the TOEFL exam.

At the beginning, the listening part, there was a little problem. The computer did not work. Pro Dennis came in and handled it for quite a while. It made us about 15 minutes late and a little anxious.

The score came out finally, with my little disappointment.

510 is alike a grade C. If I want to apply to the UC Berkeley, I need a Grade A. In order words, I need to improve the score from 510 to 620, in one month.

I am not sure what the Writing Paper stands for, reading? But there is another reading already. Anyway, whichever part is far from good. In order to get the total score 620, I can only work harder than currently.

I took the TOEFL test today, for the first time. Every beginning is difficult, especially for a challenge-level test. When the time ended, I actually felt a little dizzy.

The test I took was a paper-based test, which was a little different from the internet-based test using widely nowadays. It consisted of three sections. Each of the sections was designed to test the different abilities of candidates.

Section 1 was the listening, and it was divided into three parts. Each part had its own specially propose. For example, part one was likely to test the comprehension of the day-to-day conversations, and part three was probably to test the listening ability of the lectures. Due to not understanding some conversations and questions, I surmised that I lost 10 or 12 questions to the whole 50 questions.

Today, the memory rate falls by a wide margin, dropping to 54.6%!

It’s very terrible. The average should be 70%. Maybe the methods I take were wrong. Tomorrow I will adjust some operation to raise the rate.

It’s the fourth day for reciting TOEFL words. Everything goes with the schedule which I made up for 17 days. I find some methods to raise the rate of retentivity.

1. Observe a word to find out the character, such as inside short word, special  alphabet appear or order.
2. Spell with the Phonetic Symbols. It can enhance the understanding of a word and is propitious to tell from the other words.
3. Repeat the Chinese explanation five times at least, at the same time, look through the word again and again.
4. Finish a word, go back to the last one to recite it again.
5. Finish six words-about half a page, go back for them to have a check. Mark the words can’t be being remembered. Do the same with the last half page. And the same with the whole page.
6. Finish one page, go back to the last page to have a test. Mark the words.
7. Finish one list, check them over.

The forgetting rate is 21.1%, a little higher then yesterday.

When I counted the mistakes, I found that I was bewildered by those type of words: verb words, containing the meaning of “打、骂、责怪、指责”.

I should make a list for the fallible words tomorrow.
